Ingredients

For the Patties
  • 1 pound Ground Beef 80/20 blend recommended
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs Plain or seasoned
  • 1 large Egg Beaten
  • 1 medium Onion Finely diced
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Adjust to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper Freshly ground
For the Gravy
  • 2 tablespoons Butter Can substitute with olive oil
  • 1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour For thickening
  • 2 cups Beef Broth Low sodium preferred
  • 1/2 cup Heavy Cream For richness
  • 1 medium Onion Sliced for gravy
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder

Equipment

  • oven-safe skillet

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, finely diced onion, salt, and pepper. Gently mix until just combined, then shape into 6 to 8 oval patties, about 1 inch thick, and set aside.
  2. Preheat an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Brown each side of the patties for about 3-4 minutes until golden. Remove and set aside, leaving the drippings in the skillet.
  3. Reduce heat to medium. Add butter to the skillet. Once melted, add sliced onions and sauté until soft and light golden, about 5 minutes. Stir in flour, cooking for 2 minutes to create a roux. Gradually whisk in beef broth and heavy cream until smooth.
  4. Nestle the browned hamburger steaks back into the skillet, ensuring they are well coated with gravy. Cover with foil and bake at 350°F for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
  5. Let the Amish Hamburger Steak Bake rest for about 10 minutes before serving to allow the gravy to thicken and flavors to settle. Serve warm.
