Ingredients

For the Donut Batter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Substitute with a gluten-free blend for a gluten-free option.
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar Coconut sugar can be used for a healthier choice.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt Can be omitted for low-sodium diets.
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast Quick-acting yeast is preferred over active dry yeast.
  • 2/3 cup warm milk Substitute with non-dairy milk for a vegan option.
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter Try coconut oil for dairy-free donuts.
  • 2 large egg yolks Use flax or chia eggs for a vegan alternative.
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Optional but recommended for depth.
For the Filling
  • 1 cup jelly or jam Choose a type without large fruit pieces for a smooth bite.
For the Coating
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar Feel free to experiment with flavored sugars.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Donut cutter
  • baking sheet
  • piping bag

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, instant yeast, and salt. Whisk together until thorough.
  2. Gradually pour in warm milk, melted unsalted butter, egg yolks, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth.
  3. Cover with a towel and let the mixture rest for 10 minutes in a warm place.
  4. Gradually add an additional cup of flour, stirring gently until a soft dough forms. Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  5. Place the kneaded dough back into the bowl and let it rise in a warm area for about 45 minutes until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  7. Roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thick. Use a donut cutter to cut out about 12 donuts.
  8. Allow the donuts to rise for about 20 minutes until slightly puffed.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes until lightly golden.
  10. Remove from the oven, brush with melted butter and roll in granulated sugar. Fill with jelly using a piping bag.
